Each year, Niagara University recognizes students for academic, community service and leadership achievements at the College of Arts and Sciences Day of Recognition. This year’s event was especially poignant in part because of a special presentation for Madeleine Kates ‘18. Maddie was honored with awards for Outstanding Achievement in Biology and for Honors in Psychology and was presented with her Bachelor of Arts degree as a triple major in life science, psychology and environmental science. Maddie was a non-traditional NU student. Dr. Timothy Ireland, provost and vice president of Academic Affairs explains, “For the better part of her time here as an undergrad, Madeleine has been fully online … due to a serious medical accident that occurred midway through her senior year of high school. While it left her unable to participate in normal college activities and in-person classes, it didn’t extinguish her dream of going to college and earning a degree.” Between personal health issues and a global pandemic, there were many barriers to Maddie’s success but she worked tirelessly and excelled in her academic and personal endeavors. She earned membership in three prestigious academic honor societies but her work was not limited to school. Maddie developed a medical device for which she has a patent pending, sewed hundreds of cloth masks for charitable organizations and wrote for a monthly health and wellness magazine. What’s next for a woman who has already accomplished so much? Maddie will go on to pursue a Master of Public Health (MPH) from University of Manchester, UK with a specialization in communicable disease prevention and control.
