Barbara Staebell Rooney ’74 has vivid memories of SHA from her childhood. Her momMarilyn Klosterman Staebell ’50 and fellow members of the class of 1950 referred to one another as “sorority sisters.” Naturally, Barb and her sister Karen Staebell Michalek ‘76 considered these women their aunts, and they were impressed by the supportive bonds of sisterhood among the women, continuing long after graduation. “Our family’s relationship with Sacred Heart Academy began 75 years ago when my mother enrolled,” shared Barbara Rooney ’74. Barb expressed gratitude that a SHA education was so important to her mother that she was willing to take a job outside of the home in order to help pay the tuition for her and Karen to attend SHA. Barb’s own legacy at SHA is also a rich one. She joined the Alumnae Board back in the 1980s. During the 1990s and early 2000s, Barb enthusiastically cheered on nieces Kristy Michalek Russell ‘01 and Rachel Michalek Jankowski ‘03 as they competed in SHA athletics. Later in the 2000s Barb was invited to join SHA’s Board of Directors where she served from 2006 to 2013. She served as Board President when the new Athletic Center was opened and eventually left the board to become SHA’s Director of Athletics. Over the years, she has added to her responsibilities and now is the Director of Athletics and Student Life as well as the COVID Coordinator for the Academy. Barb endowed this scholarship to honor her mother, sister and nieces. When asked why she established the scholarship, Barb responded, “I cherish my relationship with SHA and the bond that it has strengthened among my family members and hope to ensure that future generations will be able to experience the same.” To learn more about establishing an endowed scholarship, please contact Susan Reiser Daniels ‘92, Director of Advancement at sdaniels@ sacredheartacademy.org .
