At the time, the idea garnered very little support. The consensus was that only male schools were funded through annual campaigns of this nature. A small group of dedicated alumnae was keenly aware that Sacred Heart needed to establish this fund in order to survive and grow. Now, look how far we’ve come as women!” Marilyn’s initiative, work ethic, and leadership were demonstrated through her commitment to her beloved Sacred Heart and in her career as an executive at American Airlines. While the airline industry eventually took her to Texas, she remained closely connected to Sacred Heart and her classmates, always working to make Sacred Heart more attainable for students and families. After retirement, Marilyn relocated to Massachusetts to be near her sister, Susan Schmitt ‘64. Inspired by the impact their SHA education has had on their lives, the sisters decided to more deeply commit to today’s students. They have provided a substantial financial aid gift, allowing a member of the class of 2025 to complete SHA without financial worry. In addition, they have committed to offering a full, four-year tuition gift to a member of the class of 2029. This significant investment demonstrates Marilyn’s long-held belief that a Franciscan education at Sacred Heart is life-changing for girls. Beyond believing in SHA, she recognizes that as an alumna, she can positively impact the future by providing this gift. Because of women like Marilyn, the Sisters of St. Francis’ legacy of transformational education lives on. Sacred Heart is profoundly grateful that Marilyn’s visionary leadership continues to nurture our community. Susan Schmitt ‘64
