The name Alicia means “noble” and she combined her unpretentious nobility with unwavering optimism and determination, always finding the positive in everything. She always had a bright, welcoming smile no matter what was going on in her life. Even at a young age, Alicia was very focused and ambitious. She set high goals for herself and was a natural achiever. At SHA, she was an Honor Society member and a talented athlete in tennis, basketball and cross country. Alicia’s intellectual preparedness, spiritual grounding, commitment to service, and leadership were enhanced during her years at Sacred Heart. Alicia was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer in 2017. She was living in NYC with her husband and their 16-month-old son Nicholas, and was eight months pregnant with their daughter, Alexandra. The family made difficult adjustments, returning to Alicia’s hometown where she would undergo cancer treatments and reside with her supportive parents, Mark and Marlene. Alicia chose not to focus on an uncertain future, but instead used her energy to make memories with her beautiful family and find ways to stay with them for as long as possible. She never complained or asked for anything. Her wish was to help give others the same foundational start in life that she had at Sacred Heart Academy. Alicia was a third generation SHA alumna (grandmother, Mary Considine Saviola’26 and aunt, Mary Clare Saviola ’63) and a cousin to several who also attended. She found special, long lasting connections at her alma mater. Her selfless desire was to share this educational experience with other young women through a scholarship in her name. When Alicia’s battle ended peacefully on October 26, 2019, her desire to help other girls attend SHA became the goal of everyone who loved her. By founding the Alicia Saviola Hermsen ’95 Memorial Scholarship , Alicia will be honored and remembered in a meaningful way for generations to come. For her family, friends and all who loved her, it is an honor to help carry out her wishes and continue her legacy. Donations can be sent to: Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart, 3860 Main Street Buffalo, NY 14226, ATTN: Saviola Scholarship.
