BUFFALO ACADEMY OF THE SACRED HEART Annual Report 2022-2023 It is with immense gratitude that we present to you our annual report for the 2022-23 school year. In this publication, we chose to showcase artwork from the Joie de Vivre: Joy of Life, Embracing God’s Creation art show, which visually depicts the profound joy and vitality that is at the heart of our Franciscan values and a Sacred Heart education. Our artists have channeled their creativity to express the joy of learning, friendship, and living in harmony with the world around us, and their art helps remind us of the importance of our mission to provide an education that enriches the spirit, mind, and body. We express our deepest appreciation to our patrons and donors. Your generosity has been the cornerstone of our success, enabling us to maintain our commitment to providing a transformative education to young women in Western New York. Your support has allowed us to continue the important work started by the Sisters of St. Francis back in 1877. This report serves as a testament to the many ways to give and support the mission of Sacred Heart Academy. It highlights stories of philanthropy and demonstrates that the generosity of our patrons is making a SHA education accessible to more students. Your generosity also helps provide the enriching classroom and extracurricular activities that round out a student’s SHA experience. We are profoundly grateful for your partnership and your wise investment in the future of our girls. One of the core values we hold dear is stewardship. SHA is committed to the responsible and transparent management of the resources entrusted to the Academy. The graphs contained in this report showcase the direct impact and importance of your gifts to our students. We look forward to your continued support and partnership as we carry forward the mission of Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart, inspired by the enduring spirit of St. Francis, St. Clare, and the Sisters of St. Francis and guided by our unwavering commitment to empowering young women to become servant leaders and engaged citizens through excellence in education. Peace and All Good, Jennifer M. Demert, Head of School 1

BUFFALO ACADEMY OF THE SACRED HEART Annual Report 2022-2023 Jane Gies Rasmussen ’70 “I’ve got to say I am enjoying retirement! That’s a big statement coming from me since I enjoyed working and didn’t know what I would do without a full-time career.” With that sentiment, Jane Gies Rasmussen ‘70 demonstrates the grace and positivity that she brings to all she does. Jane has never been one to “take it easy.” Her retirement is continually enriched by volunteer service as she splits time between the Pacific Northwest and her father’s boyhood home of Wyandotte, Michigan. In Wyandotte, she is particularly active and reflects on her service to that community enthusiastically, “As a volunteer museum docent for a small riverfront city in Michigan, it amazed me to learn all that women did during the Victorian era (late 1800s to early 1900s). It turns out that my grandmother was on the city’s first female basketball team started by the mayor’s wife! Surprisingly, women owned businesses but couldn’t vote. You can be assured that I am communicating women’s history as I give tours of the museum. We’ve come a long way! When I see all that is available at SHA for young women - there is an International Baccalaureate Diploma and the 103 members of the Class of 2023 were awarded 727 scholarships - I can’t wait to hear about the glass ceilings they break through!” Still, transitioning from a career spanning more than four decades came with some adjustments. Jane shared a few of the things she misses about corporate life and how she accommodates these changes. “I miss healthcare benefits, reimbursement for travel expenses, and matching corporate donations, especially to SHA. Signing up for Medicare Advantage helped with healthcare, and a Frequent Flyer program, credit card points, and traveling offseason has helped with travel expenses. As for donations to SHA – well it turns out I can disburse funds from my IRA directly to SHA, and those funds are not taxed at all, while regular disbursements from my IRA are fully taxed, even for RMD (Required Minimum Distribution). When I learned about this, I set up an annual IRA disbursement through my financial management organization. Who knew all the economics of retirement!” ANJALI PARIKH ’26 2 New Stages Bring New Opportunities

After a successful career in healthcare administration, Judy recognizes that her time at SHA helped lay the groundwork for her development as a professional and a leader. A strong foundation of faith, service to others, and deep friendships have continually influenced her choices. Judy’s experience as a Sacred Heart student inspired her to provide for SHA’s future by naming the Academy as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy. Judy explains, “A few years ago, I engaged an attorney to formalize an estate plan. That process called for an examination of assets. In reviewing my financial plan and determining the disposition of my assets at the time of my death, I remembered an insurance policy that I took out when I was in my mid-twenties. At that time, forty years ago, I had graduated from graduate school, was paying student loans, and lived paycheck-to-paycheck. I felt an insurance policy was a prudent way to pay for expenses in the unlikely event of my death. “Fast forward to the present. I have been extremely fortunate to have had a career that has been fulfilling both personally and financially. Knowing that there are sufficient resources to cover expenses at the time of my death, I wanted the proceeds of the insurance policy to benefit something that was meaningful in my life. Sacred Heart Academy provided me with a solid foundation academically, socially, and spiritually. I cherish the friendships, memories, and strong academic curriculum that Sacred Heart provided. Designating Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart as the beneficiary on this insurance policy was an easy way to give back. As I follow the school on social media and receive the Cordecho publications, I can clearly see that Sacred Heart continues to provide young women with the tools to be successful in life! I am proud to be a Sacred Heart graduate!” Judy Grzywa Clontz ’77 Providing for the Future

BUFFALO ACADEMY OF THE SACRED HEART Annual Report 2022-2023 SHA Loyalty Club Sacred Heart’s most loyal donors are recognized as part of the SHA Loyalty Club. In addition to being a dedicated supporter of SHA, Elizabeth has been recognized as a Christus Super Omnia Distinguished Alumna for her work as an oncologist. She currently lives in Sarasota, FL with her husband and two children. All of that adds up to a very busy life. While the intention to support SHA is always present, her life as an active mom and professional sometimes gets in the way. For this reason, she has elected to support SHA on an ongoing basis, every month. Subscription giving, as this is known, removes responding to a letter or email from her to-do list and allows her to enjoy reading the Cordecho without looking for her checkbook. Liz shares, “I believe in all-girls education. Schools focused specifically on educating young women are not available everywhere, including in Sarasota. I want to support and encourage a faith-filled environment that allows young women to be the best they can be. Sacred Heart gave me so much. I believe that if we are fortunate, we are called to be generous.” 6 Carol Siefert Laschinger ’56 Kenneth and Sandra Levan Maureen Piazza Lopez ’83 Kathleen Seitz Mazurek ’68 Marie Gordon McCarthy ’57 Sharon Jarvis Menchini ’60 Patricia Drzewiecki Nesensohn ’60 Jennifer Pelosi Noah ’93 Barbara Eckert Ochterski ’61 Mary Ann Kennedy O’Connell ’53 Mary Gersitz Patterson ’57* Mary Anne Kreher Peer ’78 Colleen Webb Prorok ’65 Therese Cunningham Reinagel ’61 Barbara Staebell Rooney ’74 Elaine Szczepankiewicz Sattelberg ’72 Mickey McGarry Slind ’56 Cherrie Majkowski Solomon ’73 Florence Hejza Stack ’47 Barbara Eye Stanley ’72 Annette Donaruma Suffoletto ’55 Elaine Reeder Telaak ’58 Susan Barczak Uba ’61 Margaret Mandell Walter ’45 Carol Kolb Wiktorski ’64 JIOIA D’ANDREA-MUCCIARELLI ’23 Elizabeth Guancial ‘97 with her family Called to Give

From this vantage point, she has witnessed how young women are impacted by a Sacred Heart education. Peggy is committed to furthering Sacred Heart’s mission, and she uses all available resources to do so. “As a retiree from a major corporation, I am fortunate to have retained access to a corporate matching gift. Matching gifts are such an easy way to double the benefit of a gift! I encourage everyone to check into their employer’s matching gifts program and take advantage of it whenever possible.” Pat Horrigan Creahan ’73 worked with Peggy and the Class of 1973 reunion committee to set a goal of establishing an endowed scholarship as they celebrated the 50th anniversary of their graduation in 2023. While the goal initially felt daunting, the classmates were committed to making SHA accessible to future generations of girls. Peggy’s matching gift helped push them well over their goal. As a result, the class of 1973 looks forward to proudly presenting their first scholarship to a member of the class of 2028. Alumnae Giving Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart’s Annual Loyalty Fund was established by alumnae as a means to give future generations of young women the opportunity to access a transformative education. The Academy is deeply grateful for the generosity of our graduates and their commitment to today’s students. The Class of 1973 A Perfect Match

BUFFALO ACADEMY OF THE SACRED HEART Annual Report 2022-2023 Maureen Piazza ’83 and Favio Lopez met in the early 1980s on the campus of what is now known as Canisius University. An urban college experience was comfortable for both, as Maureen grew up in the city of Buffalo, and Favio, after emigrating from Cuba with his parents, was raised in Brooklyn. Maureen and Favio are both grateful for their transformative Catholic High School experiences. Because of the impact Sacred Heart had on Maureen, she felt particularly compelled to help students living in the City of Buffalo enroll at Sacred Heart. From Favio’s perspective as an executive leader in a multinational corporation, this is an investment in a student and in society. “Catholic schools in general, and specifically Sacred Heart, have the ability to form students intellectually but also ethically. The world is thirsting for bright women with strong values to lead us into the future. That is what Sacred Heart is contributing and why we give to Sacred Heart.” Maureen and Favio have made the commitment to meet the financial needs of a promising student for her four years at Sacred Heart. In addition, they are continuing to build an endowed scholarship in Maureen’s name which will live in perpetuity and continue to create opportunities for young women. Their intentions align perfectly with Sacred Heart’s foundresses, the Sisters of St. Francis, who continually answer the call to serve the underserved and make the world a better place. BUFFALO ACADEMY OF THE SACRED HEART Annual Report 2022-2023 20 Jacqueline Shea Wopperer ’52 and her husband, George, worked together to build a successful family business and a loving family including five sons and four daughters (Patricia Wopperer-Olin ’77, Jackie Wopperer Stoj ’79, Julianne Wopperer Thompson ’80, and Suzanne Wopperer ’80.) After Jackie passed away in 2016, her children agreed that they would honor her by committing to Sacred Heart’s events going forward. Jackie’s son, Anton, shared, “My mom loved being associated with Sacred Heart. Our family is committed to attending events and being an active part of the community, just as she was.” RIBCO, Inc. is a commercial and industrial roofing company, founded by George and Jackie and now led by Anton and George, Jr. RIBCO has proudly been the first corporate sponsor to commit to our Sandstone Dinner Auction each year. Golfers at the Sister Maria Pares Golf Tournament have seen RIBCO, Inc. signs at the tournament for more than a decade. Their corporate commitment is as enduring as their family’s involvement, year after year. Anton continues, “We know that donating is important, but for our family, it is about more than that. It is about engaging with the Sacred Heart community, which has given our family so much. This is a way for us to bring people together to celebrate our parents’ legacy.” Sr. Maria Pares, OSF ’58 Golf Tournament and Luncheon Ahrens Financial Group Michael and Barbara Burns Cara Henning Camardo ’92 Matthew Conron Deborah Greene Cercone ’78 Susan Reiser Daniels ’92 Kevin Deakin Mike Deakin Marybeth Flanagan Doherty ’79 Carrie Fahey, ChFC, CFP Kevin and Julie (Casimino ’87) Flanagan Susan Fortunato ’79 David and Carrie Frank Troy and Heather Gibson Margaret Buchanan Johnson ’73 Patricia-Anne Calvaneso Lacomb ’73 Lu Engineers Manzella Marketing Group, Inc.
